Local Love / Coffee Cat

Even before Sebastian opened his shop around the corner from Coffee Cat, I’d frequent the coffee shop both for its stellar location across from the historic courthouse downtown and for the lovely owner, Krista Fritzen’s choice of baristas (is that the official title?).  I’m big on personable and nice people so I can totally appreciate this aspect of a business.  Also, I’m hooked on both their vanilla latte and ginger dragon drinks, so it’s a win-win-win. And whenever friends and family visit, we always swing by Coffee Cat.  Always. This is why… Delicious coffee + happy peeps… Tasty treats + a beautiful view… And here’s Krista.  Both she and her husband, Jason, are awesome (and their little boy is the sweetest + quite a fascinating storyteller).  Besides they have great senses of humor and good taste in music (can I get a shout out for Built to Spill?!).  See?  Win-win. Live in town or planning on visiting? Here ya go: Coffee Cat 1201 Anacapa StSanta Barbara, California (805) 962-7164

Eat: Color dipped marshmallows…

I guess the color wouldn’t make these marshmallows taste any differently, but they sure do look snappy.  They’d be a good treat for a fun party or to add to a care package.   More on the color dipped marshmallow how-to here.

Product packaging…

I try to keep my skin + hair care regimen to a minimum.  I’ll wash and condition my hair, finger comb it in the shower, then just apply coconut oil to towel dried hair; sometimes I’ll add a tiny bit of olive oil.  But that’s it.  For my skin, I use an olive oil based cleanser, then steam my face.  I rarely add a daily moisturizer to my face, but I will spray on rose water from time to time.  For my body, once a week I use a homemade mix of coconut oil + vitamin e or, on occasion, olive oil.   I dab on a fragrance that I mix myself + apply red lipstick (and put on a hair adornment) to begin my day.  It keeps the routine easy and I know exactly what’s going into my skin.  Simple, easy, no hassle. I am in the process of prettifying my jars of homemade concoctions, but when I see certain product packaging, it makes me secretly long for the days of having beautiful designs on my shelf- even though I wouldn’t otherwise use them.  These are some cool ones I’ve recently come across while searching for product packaging design online…  Anthropologie teamed up with Soap + Paper Factory to create these stunning designs.  (The top featured image at the beginning of this post is from Tokyomilk ) and these bubble bath bottles (swoon)…  And this one from Printed + Folded and Anthropologie… Such beautiful art, don’t you think? This week: parties, babies, friends…

This was a week of gatherings, meetings, a party, and many many babies. It was our friend’s birthday and we went to his surprise party.  Todd’s a kind and sweet person and we were glad to be a part of celebrating a milestone birthday with him.  Here I am- wearing new bangs!- with both Todd and his wife, Kita…     Then I had a lovely and inspiring creative meeting with friend, Kerstin, who also happens to be the insanely talented floral designer behind Blue Magnolia … A pretty photo of a lace blouse.  I love this top but it takes me forever to button it! Plus an emerald green hair comb, out for a customer.  This color flips me out… And then the babies… lots of ’em.  Friends, Laura and Paul, had their baby shower last weekend.  They are an adorable couple, as you can clearly see… At the baby shower, Becca + Ralph and Amy + Sean, with their uniquely lovable little ones… Gah, they were cute. Plus, some great links from around the web: Ombre stairs. Would you do it? I’d wear these as bikini bottoms, but I don’t think I’d feel too comfortable wearing them as shorts. How true.  Enjoy a happy weekend, friends. Love, Cath

Interior design syles…

Sometimes my home decorating tastes vary, but what remains constant is a longing and draw toward the strength, comfort, and beauty of age.  Ideally, a home created from the architectural foundation of houses built within the decades of 1890- 1950 make me feel as though I am grounded and at peace; like there is sunshine covering me even when it’s cloudy out in the world.  That’s the best way I can describe my affinity for these eras of design (too dramatic?). I’m a particular freak about the details… + +  More of my favorite full room + detail home decor found here.  [ door details / ornate radiator / smeg refrigerator / window ]
