If you follow design blogs and, no less, Pinterest, you’ll notice a fairly new trend called Stranger Art. Which is pretty much what it sounds like… art whose subject is a portrait of a stranger. I’ve long enjoyed perusing vintage and thrift shops and one of the perks is coming across old photographs of people long gone, discarded at yard + estate sales; donated to the Good Will. Kind of a bummer to think of family photos left to their own devices like this, but thankfully there are those of us who embrace their beauty and, as my friend Gail does, buys them up to recreate with. Going a step further, Stranger Art offers a whole new appreciation for portrait paintings of people we’ve never met, know not a thing about, yet still feel a resonance with. Keeps a space interesting and more dynamic, don’t you think?
I’m curious…would you decorate with Stranger Art? Oh hell yes? Oh hell no, too creepy?
